Алкалоид, производное пурина purine, содержится в кофе, чае, орехах кола и некоторых других растениях, обладает стимулирующим центральную нервную систему и сосудорасширяющим действием, ингибирует фермент фосфодиэстеразу, увеличивая содержание циклического АМФ cyclic AMP; в генетических экспериментах используется как ингибитор процессов репарации ДНК repair.
